Everyone and their mother went to Portugal last year (or at least it felt like it), and if you did or know someone who did, you may have heard of bacalhau. Bacalhau is Portuguese for cod, and specifically, a dried and salted cod that is later rehydrated for consumption. The Portuguese sure know how to eat and if theyโre fans of this fish, itโs gotta be good.
Miss Canโs Codfish in Olive Oil with Garlic is a refreshing tin with a just-caught taste. A nice amount of cod chunks are packed in a delightfully clean olive oil with pieces of garlic. Thatโs it! The can has a very clean smell upon opening with a small touch of garlic aroma. This fish has neither skin nor bones. It flakes into tender pieces very easily (much like youโd expect from cod) and melts in your mouth. The flavor is light and mildly garlicky and begs for a fresh sprinkle of flaky salt. Itโs a sophisticated and well-packed tin that exemplifies fresh flavor.
Try this tin with your finest spreads and breads. I loved this tin flaked over a piece of crusty bread with a healthy sprinkle of Maldon salt over top. If you have a nice olive oil on hand, drizzle that on as well. This fish would also be delicious with a sweet tomato spread, or a grainy mustard. Cod is so delicate, it wonโt go well with something too crunchy like a cracker or chip. Keep it simple and youโll be happy!
This is a tasty clean tin that would be perfect for both the entry-level tin-nesseur, and the tinned fish pro. Itโs not your typical sardine, and I promise youโll be impressed. In the United States, you can find this tin at World Market. If youโre traveling abroad, you can find this tin at Miss Canโs restaurant and shop in Lisbon.
Thanks to my dad and mum for bringing me this tin all the way from Portugal!
